I'm not as familiar with Word Humboldt as I would like to be, but I truly respect their program out of Arcata, CA. Dylan Collins is the Founder/Manager, working with the Ink People to turn Word Humboldt into a Dreammaker Project. He is organizing, promoting, and hosting events around Humboldt County for nearly five years now!
It's been a few years, but I was lucky enough to experience the Open Mic Poetry Night at Northtown Coffee in Arcata recently, where I heard about the Redwood Poetry Festival. I had to shout out and show my respects for Word Humboldt, for bringing together an amazing community of poets and performance artists in Humboldt County, California.
Every time I have been to a Word Humboldt event, they've been packed with genuine people showing each other love and acceptance. Nothing is off limits it seems, as performers speak their hearts and minds leaving nothing unsaid. I've been surprised with the inclusivity, as they pass around a nightly writing prompt for people to practice and add their input.
I've seen tears, laughter, and all ranges of emotions on stage, even in the few times I've been lucky enough to experience their events. It would be lackluster if I didn't point out the diversity, which is another reason to celebrate and come to learn from others. I'm glad to feature the Redwood Poetry Festival here because I know it will inspire me to go!
I'm going to post their IG promotions below for those who don't use social media.
Please take some time out of this next week to witness a budding community in action. Show up to support the Redwood Poetry Festival so that it may become an annual event in Humboldt County, CA! Much love and respect to all of the participating poets, artists, and locations. I see you all working consistently and love what you're all doing.
@wordhumboldt Thank you for the inspiration.
Note that on April 5th, Myles Bullen will be performing at North Town Coffee, whom some will recall I've written about here before.
