Hey, Humboldt County! This is your friendly community connector here to tell you, you're great! Humboldt County is going through changes, as is the rest of the world, constantly changing in this never ending circus we've come to know as human life. With all of these changes, I'd like to take a little time to share some thoughts about the place I've called home for over 21 years now.
When I first moved here I was 12 years old out of Los Angeles, CA. I moved around a lot as a kid and I was used to being ousted in a new place. So.. I came here with a plan that I was not going to let that happen again, but it didn't take long to recognize that Humboldt was not like anywhere I'd ever been before. While I was being reserved and closed in my heart, I saw how my class mates would reward each other's unique personalities.
Soon enough, I began feeling free to be my goofy self! I began to understand that Humboldt County is a place with lots of different kinds of people. As I've grown older, I've seen that no matter what community there is to explore whether it be hip hop, ecstatic dance, metal, art, college scene, poetry, cannabis, pow wow's.. The same energy rings true, that people really seem to accept each other for who we are here. I'm grateful to come from a place that supports individual expression and knows the value of coming together.
So here it is, me giving props to the place I live and writing this down so I can remember it with me where ever I go. I know we're all going through a lot right now, so I want to encourage all of us to remember who we are and get in touch with our roots. Thankfully, I am not alone in leading this charge! Redwood Roots, East Branch Media, and Fatbol Clothing are inviting us to A Celebration of Music, Art, and Community at the Mateel Center in Redway, CA, this March 30th!
Please come on out, bring your friends and know you will be warmly welcomed by the friendly people of Humboldt County. We know how to get down, and pretty much anyone who is honest and friendly can find their place here. That's just one thing I love about Humboldt County. With everything going on lately, I want to keep this blog post short and sweet because sometimes we just need to take things slow, to celebrate our connection and show love for the home town!
